Does emergency lighting perform poorly in the presence of smoke?

Backup lights perform normally in the presence of thin smoke, but poorly in the presence of thick smoke. This is because smoke particles prevent them from illuminating the surrounding area. An emergency light in thick smoke resembles a headlight in thick fog.

What are the requirements for an Emergency Exit?

Code is pretty specific in requirements which can be viewed at our NFPA 101 Life Safety Code Page.

How long will emergency lights last?

It depends on ambient temperature and location. However, the batteries that power the lights typically last up to 4/5 years before replacements are required.

Why Test Emergency Lighting?

Because power failures and emergency situations are unpredictable, fire marshals, electrical inspectors, building owners and others want to know that emergency lighting equipment will function properly when needed. Codes and regulations require periodic testing, visual inspections and written records of test results for all emergency lighting equipment.

Is LED lighting better for emergency lighting?

There are many advantages in using LED technology for emergency lighting over incandescent and fluorescent lamps. Mainly for their low running costs and energy performance. LED’s are today’s chosen choice for the majority of Emergency Lighting manufacturers.

What is the difference between Non Maintained and Maintained lighting?

Non maintained Emergency Lighting is a luminaire which will only be lit from its battery back up in the event of a mains failure. A maintained luminaire can operate in normal operation and can be switched along with all other normal luminaires. In the event of a loss of mains power the luminaire will be lit from its battery back up but will have a lower emergency output.

What is the minimum lux level for Emergency Lighting?

Lighting level requirements state that designers must be able to achieve a minimum of 1 lux anywhere on the centre line of the escape route. This illuminance must be provided for the full 3-hour duration and maintained throughout the emergency luminaires life.

How many exit / emergency lights do we need in our building?

Typically, one should be visible from anywhere in common areas. For further clarification, a Autolite can do a walk through to determine what is needed per code and manufacture specifications.

What is the difference between an exit and a fire exit?

An exit route is the route of travel within the premises that occupants are most familiar with. It also normally routes that is used to enter and leave the building. A Fire exit is an alternative route of travel and one that is provided specifically for use in an emergency situation.

International standards recommend that, for a means of escape route signing system to be effective, it is important that from any place within the building, occupants should have sight of a sign, or a series of the sign, which lead them to a place of safety. If there is a choice of escape routes, the escape route signing system should indicate the shortest level of distance. If at any place there is a choice of two escape routes of equal travel distance. Both routes should be indicated by separate series of signs.
